The Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, is a premier resaerch institute in eastern India that emphasises inter–disciplinary scholarship. Since its inception, it has accepted scholars wishing to pursue their PhDs with specific faculty advisors at the Centre. Applicants may currently choose from any of the following areas of work: Economics, History, Political Science, Geography, Sociology / Social Anthropology, Development Studies, Women Studies, and Cultural Studies, and Environmental Studies.

Selected candidates will have to carry out research under the supervision of a member of the CSSSC faculty and will have to register for a PhD degree with Jadavpur University, Kolkata, to which the Centre's PhD Programme is affiliated.
