RESEARCH
TRAINING PROGRAMME
Objectives:
The
Research Training Programme (RTP) is meant for research students in the early
stages of their doctoral work. It involves reading courses and written
assignments. The programme consists of a core of interdisciplinary courses in
the social sciences and a choice of specialized advanced courses in a host of
disciplines mentioned below. The objective is to equip young researchers with a
general grasp of the main intellectual concerns of social science research, the
most important recent trends in the social sciences and a strong grounding in
interdisciplinary methods.
Relevant Disciplines:
The
Research Training Programme is offered in the disciplines of Economics, History,
Political Science, Sociology, Social Anthropology, Geography and Cultural
Studies.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be prepared to undertake full-time research and must have an
M.A. / M.Sc. degree in any branch of the social sciences, humanities with at
least 50 percent marks and overall average of 50 percent marks in the Higher
Secondary and B. A. Honours (or equivalent) examinations. The upper age limit
for selection is 30. These requirements may, however, be relaxed in exceptional
cases.
Release of Advertisements:
The
advertisement for applications for enrolment in the Programme is published in
the ‘Economic and Political Weekly’ (EPW) in March 2008.
The Centre’s website
also carries the information. In addition, fliers are sent to various academic
institutions of the countries of the South for the benefit of International
students.
Procedure for Application:
Applications should be sent to the Registrar in the prescribed
application form along with a summary description of not more than 1000 words of
the research area / problem in which the applicant is interested. The last date
for receiving applications from International participants is 15th
May,2008 and 30th May,2008 for Indian participants.
Selection Procedure:
The
final selection of participants will be made from a short list of applicants to
be interviewed by a Selection Committee. Selected participants will be intimated
in due course and the first semester of the RTP will commence around 4th August,2008.
Auditors:
In exceptional cases, students not
registered as regular participants of the RTP may audit one or more Compulsory
or Optional courses. They will be required to do all reading and writing
assignments required for the particular courses they choose to audit. They will
not be eligible for the regular RTP Certificate.
Fees and Deposits:
There is no fee required for
participants in the programme. A refundable library deposit of Rs. 1000 is to be
paid by each participant for availing borrowing facilities in the Centre’s
library for the duration of the course.
Library Facilities:
The library of the Centre will be
open to all participants in the RTP on all working days of the Centre from 10.30
a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Each participant will be subject to the general rules and
procedures of readership of the library.
Other Information:
1.
Participants who complete the course and obtain the
RTP Certificate become eligible for applying to the Indian Council of Social
Science Research (ICSSR) for doctoral fellowships.
2. For
the time being the CSSSC cannot offer any facilities for accommodation to the
participants.
